PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. -- The PGA TOUR and the Greater San Joaquin Valley
Charity Foundation jointly announced Thursday that the Jack Nicklaus and Jack
Nicklaus II co-designed Championship Course at Running Horse Golf & Country Club
in Fresno will be the site of a new PGA TOUR event debuting in the fall of 2007.
The agreement is for six years. The 72-hole tournament, to be played in October,
will feature a 132-player field and purse of $4.5 million, with $810,000 going
to the winner. The Golf Channel will televise all four rounds.
The Central California Veterans Home Support Foundation and the U.S.
Department of Veteran Affairs together will receive the majority of charitable
contributions generated by the event. The official competition will be preceded
by special functions honoring U.S. veterans as well as a Wednesday pro-am.
“Fresno is an outstanding community to host a PGA TOUR event and we’re confident
that Running Horse will be a terrific host site for the world-class players on
TOUR,” said PGA TOUR Commissioner Tim Finchem.
“Unique to the tournament is it will benefit military veterans, both locally and
nationally. We look forward to this event becoming a strong part of next year’s
Fall Series, which will determine the final qualifiers for the new FedEx Cup
competition.”
Running Horse Golf & Country Club is managed by Troon Golf, the leader in
upscale golf course management, development and marketing, and currently plans
to be open for play in the spring of 2007 for members only. A clubhouse of over
30,000 square feet will be completed in summer of 2007.
